Northern lights

In the past few weeks I have been to a seemingly random selection of countries: Bahrain, Colombia, the USA and Canada. On the surface, there is not a lot to obviously connect each of these nations. But there are a few common threads.

A near compulsive interest in Lady Gaga is such an obvious shared characteristic it hardly needs mentioning. But each place is also preoccupied by their near neighbours. In Bahrain, it is Iran – blamed for much of the recent unrest. In Colombia, it remains Venezuela, despite an improvement of sorts in the traditionally fraught relationship. And in the USA, the chaos in the Mexican border region continues to harden attitudes towards combatting drugs and illegal immigration. [Read more…]

Something old, something new – information management and piracy

Some things make your mind warp. According to Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, the amount of data added to the internet every two days is equivalent to all the data generated in the world from the dawn of civilization until 2003.

Just think about that.

Everything from those first cave paintings in southern France, the hieroglyphics on Egyptian burial tombs, the first elementary Chinese character on a fragment of ancient earthenware, right the way through to that final email you sent on new year’s eve 2002; all of that and everything in between. Not the end of the road: implications of the death of Osama bin Laden

It must have been the moment that Osama bin Laden had long expected. The point at which the intelligence trail eventually led US special forces, literally, to his front door. He has certainly had plenty of time to ponder his future. But in the decade that he had been the world’s most wanted man, how often had he objectively reviewed the success of his bloody campaign to rid the Islamic world not just of western influence but of any influence other than his own brand of extreme jihad? [Read more…]

The sum of human happiness

I am sitting on the Eurostar train service en route to Paris for a few days of meetings. Normally, a visit to the French capital in springtime is guaranteed to lift the spirits but I have been reading some worrying statistics about the Gallic state of mind. Apparently, the French are feeling gloomy.

In a recent Gallup poll only 15% of French people thought 2011 was going to be better than 2010, way behind Iraq (44%) and Afghanistan (45%). The Nigerians came out top of course on 80%. [Read more…]

From MAD to MAP

Two pieces of news grabbed my attention this week. First, carmaker Toyota has now suspended car production in Turkey, Poland, France, the UK and the USA as the knock on effect of the Japan earthquake continues to disrupt the finely tuned supply chains that have been one of the hallmarks of Toyota’s global efficiency.
